Working to advance the shift from fossil fuels to clean, renewable energies in the central and southern Appalachian region, Appalachian Voices’ largest program area is its Energy Democracy program.

Climate Justice Alliance

Advocating for resilient, regenerative and equitable economies through a just transition process with race, gender and class at the center of the solutions, the Climate Justice Alliance was formed to unite communities on the frontlines of climate impacts.

Energy Democracy National Tour

The Energy Democracy National Tour was launched in April 2018 with the goal of showcasing communities around the country, especially those of color or low-income, that are working to regain more control over their energy systems.

Science For The People

Science for the People is a science-activist organization dedicated to building a radical political movement in science and society. They are calling for a “People’s Green New Deal” to combat the climate crisis with widespread democratic input.

Sunrise Movement

A youth-led national movement fighting climate change, economic inequality and racism through initiatives like the Green New Deal, with local hubs in cities across the region like Asheville, Charlotte, Knoxville, Nashville, Roanoke and Charlottesville, Va.

Trade Unions for Energy Democracy

A global initiative working to advance democratic control of our energy systems by promoting solutions to the climate crisis and addressing energy poverty and the degradation of the land and people.

North Carolina

Energy Justice NC Coalition

Composed of 14 member organizations, including frontline communities that have suffered directly from Duke Energy’s mismanagement of coal ash, contributions to the climate crisis and other harmful actions, Energy Justice NC is committed to bringing energy choice to North Carolinians and ending Duke Energy’s monopoly control.

NC Climate Justice Collective

The North Carolina chapter of the Climate Justice Alliance embraces diversity to strengthen the movement and uses popular education and cultural organizing to address the root causes of climate change.


PVEC Member Voices

A group of Powell Valley Electric Cooperative member-owners who believe in their responsibility and right to participate in the decision-making process and who are working to amend their co-op’s bylaws, demand transparency around board decisions, and elect new members to the board.

Statewide Organizing for Community eMpowerment (SOCM)

A grassroots organization that believes in the power of communities organizing together to improve their quality of life, SOCM works for clean air and water, affordable and safe housing, education for all and a living wage for the people of Tennessee.


Clean Virginia

An advocacy organization working to fight corruption in Virginia politics and strengthen the state’s campaign finance laws against years of dominance by electric monopolies like Dominion Energy.

Virginia Organizing

Promoting public participation of people who traditionally have not had a voice in society, Virginia Organizing believes that all people deserve a voice in the economic, community, social and environmental policies that impact them.
